Trouble in Store sneak peek: Charlie Davies Mystery #13

The writing of the new Charlie book is chugging along nicely. To celebrate, here’s a sneak peek from Chapter 2…

“Oh em gee, Charlie Davies!” called a newcomer to the kitchen, carrying a huge tray of snacks I wouldn’t be caught dead eating. I might be caught dead if I did eat them, though.

“Don’t eat her food,” I whispered to Nat, then louder: “Carol! Hi!”

“You need to tone down that smile,” Nat said quietly. “It looks more like you’re baring your fangs before you rip her throat out.”

“Good note,” I replied and dialled back the wattage.

“Charlie! How are you? Still single?” Carol stuck out her bottom lip in sympathy.

“Yep. That’s me. So single. But I thought you were off the market.”

Nat’s eyebrows rose. “Oh?”

“Carol’s dating John, aren’t you, Carol?”

“No you aren’t, Carol,” said Nat.

“It’s just casual,” said Carol. “We’re not official.”

“Good,” said Nat. “Get out while you can.”

“I’m worried he loves Brisbane more than me.”

Nat’s brow furrowed. “The city?”

“The rat,” I explained.

Nat’s lip curled. “Red flag, Carol. Leave him.”

Carol gave Nat a confused smile. “Sorry, who are you?”

“Natalia. I’ve met John. You can do better.”

“Charlie actually set us up.”

Nat turned to me slowly.

“Carol and Adam had a thing that didn’t work out. I thought going out with John might…”

“Get her out of the way?” Nat muttered.

“Cheer her up.”

Carol sighed. “But John… he hasn’t made a move on me.”

“Thank god for small mercies,” said Nat.

I grimaced. “I don’t think we’re at this level of friendship yet, Carol. Please don’t feel like you need to provide detail.”

“And I have needs.”

I think I threw up a little bit in my mouth. No one should be allowed to talk publicly about their ‘needs’. “I have a need to leave this conversation. Has anyone seen the chips and dips? I was promised chips and dips.”

I hope you enjoyed it! I can’t wait to finally have this book out in the world…

xx
